The Chinese believe shiny black hair and very red lips are components of beauty. Ancient literature discusses these, but this is the first cookbook that addresses these issues. It is in two parts titled: Caring of Lips, and About Hair Protection. Each has twenty recipes.
Before each recipe set, there are hints for making lips or hair healthy, In the former, twenty lip reddening foods are detailed as are several bits of lip diagnostics for yellow, white, green, purple, and dark black lips, and for cracking lips. In the hair section, relationships between hair and internal organs, hair conditioning, removing dandruff, and prevention of hair loss are discussed. These are followed by seven suggested foods and the recipes.
This interesting volume has one or more tips, usually culinary, under the full-page color photograph of each completed dish. The rear cover says: To be real gorgeous, you need dark shiny hair and red lips...a slim body and flawless skin. What hope is there for blonds and brunettes? The selected recipe below is for hair protection.
|Black-skinned Chicken Soup|
1/2 pound black beans
2 Tablespoons dried longans, shells removed and discarded
6 slices of dried licorice
1 black-skinned chicken, blanched in boiling water for one minute
1/2 to 1 teaspoon salt
1. Fry black beans in a dry wok until fragrant.
2. Bring three quarts of water to the boil, add the beans, longans, licorice, and chicken and cook over low heat for two and a half to three hours. Season with salt then serve.
