Restaurant Review

Lu Xiang Yuan (Flushing in Queens NY)

Across the street from a Sichuan eatery is this Shandong one. New, it is not Sichuan, but the second exclusive Shandong eatery we know about in the Big Apple's borough of Queens. It features one of China's eight great food cultures, one hard to locate outside of China. This place serves foods of this province alone, and it does a banner job.

A Chinese World Cuisine award-winning chef man's the kitchen. He won top honors at a Beijing competition for one of his phenomenal dishes, simply called Fish with Rose Petals. This dish we never saw nor savored before; never even read about it. Presented with scales made of fresh rose petals, it is a gorgeous dish! No wonder it won an award in Beijing at this prestigious event.

We started our meal with Jelly Fish with Cucumber, and all nine of us are glad we did. Later, we devour a dish of Lamb with Cumin, enjoy Spicy Stir-fried Turnip, love the Beef with Peppers, and the Nanjing Water-boiled Duck. All are delicious, as is the Pumpkin Soup.

The chef here is master of all on his menu. We love his high mountain tea, his Shan Dong Pork Lapi appetizer, the Qing Dao Mussel Meat with Cucumber, and his Lamb Kidney with Hot sauce. The Stir-fried Asparagus with Scallops, the Grilled Mushrooms with Cabbage, and the Three-spice Grilled Tofu are great, too. So far, every item we eat here is terrific; OK we said it before, this chef is a master of timing and terrific tastes. We try to stop by once each week to get our fill of his marvelous food. You should, too.
