This is the only place we know in the United States where one can taste many Wenzhou foods in one eatery that specializes in them. Though small and mostly take-out, one can find a seat at one of their three tables for two and the handful of counter stools and two others in the front window. Eating here one learns about and tastes the food of this small city and its surrounding region.
Look at their color menu with its many photographs and note they must do lots of catering because it shows large take-out trays with foods worthy of a party anywhere. Here, up to nine folk prepare foods for the steady stream of those coming to find fine food for lunch, dinner, or in-between. Now twice the size of their first location at Stall 32 in the Golden Mall, the question is: How did so many find this place so fast? We are not sure, but do know that first and foremost, the lady in charge–-her English name is Sharon, is a top notch cook and a graduate of the Wenzhou Culinary School. Discover what many customers already know, this is one popular eatery. At one lunch hour, about a hundred people came in to eat here or take-out their food. The lucky ones did not have to tote it anywhere, they just managed to garner a spot and eat it immediately. We learned that Sharon loves to cook, serves many lu wie xiao chi or brined appetizers, lots of super soups, and dishes so delightful you will want to try them all. We were lucky ones on several visits, we found empty seats. The only menu is for take-out. It is colorful and pictured here with the Stewed Spareribs Noodle Soup. Ask for a copy or grab one yourself, it is to the left of the cash register. Take it home along with some Braised Boneless Pork Shoulder. We use that meat to make fantastic sandwiches. It is better than any luncheon meat you have ever tasted. Likewise the small Smoked Duck Wenzhou Flavor. That makes a fine meal for two, has virtually no fat, and just has lots of flavor. We have tried more than half the ten soups, one is better than the next; and we have eaten more than half the nine appetizers and forty-plus other dishes. For take-out, the soups are packed in big plastic bowls with secure lids. They do not spill and can be safely toted home or to work. The most ordered one seen on the menu is both a bargain and a beauty. Fish Fast Noodle Soup Wenzhou Style is one we never saw nor savored before. It has unusually good texture and taste, and how they make the fish shaped as it is, we know not. The Wonton Soup Wenzhou Style includes many dumplings wrapped in unbelievably thin dough. How thin, one can see the filling which is simple and simply fantastic. We are more than half way through the menu and have not found a single item not to lavish praise on. This eatery may be small and serve foods from a small city, but keep in mind that not coming here or toting home their food is a one big mistake one should not make! |
