Actually, the cover prefaces the title with: Curing Diseases the Chinese Way, and follows it with: A Safe and Cheap Form of Traditional Chinese Food Therapy. This book is one of several published in Malaysia on 'foods as medicine.' We reviewed Fruits as Medicine and Vegetables as Medicine in Volume 7(2) on pages 19 and 20; Volumes 7(3) on pages 15 and 16; and Volume 7(4) on pages 17 and 18 of Flavor and Fortune in the year 2000. This is another in the same series-type that explores the pharmaceutical value of foods.
This one has more than six hundred recipes that use these three traditional medicinals. An introductory chapter details past and present research and puts many recipes in each chapter. Medical Diseases has sixty-three, Surgical Conditions twenty-five, Gynecological Diseases includes twenty-five, Pediatric Diseases twenty-six, Dermatological Diseases includes twenty-seven, and Diseases of Ear, Nose and Throat has seventeen. All of these recipes do not replace medical treatment. However, they can serve as useful reference for medical and health care professionals in clinical practice or medical research, and they can provide guidance to individuals, as well.
Other volumes of the same type include Guava as Medicine by Ingfried Hobert and Harald W. Tietze and Papaya as Medicine, also by Tietze. Both are less geared to Chinese traditional medical considerations, the volume on papaya does have more in this regard, and it is more directed to homeopathic considerations.
