Seeking answers to the many queries about red yeast and red rice led me to this pamphlet. It is part of the 'Woodlands Health' series, and its cover says: Effectively Control Cholesterol Levels and Promote Cardiovascular Health, thugh we do can not attest to that. As the book says, on the reverse of the title page, and we concur: "The information in this book is for educational purposes only and is not recommended as a means of diagnosing or treating an illness." With that in mind, it does explain blood lipids, offers an all too brief historical perspective about red yeast rice and some of the supplements in the marketplace, shares some scientific validation about this food product, even a page about safety issues, considering them rare. The best part of this twenty-nine-page pamphlet are three of its pages. On them is the thirty-one item reference list; what not to do if you have high cholesterol; the eleven-item listing about eleven complementary nutrients; and the fact that red yeast is a Monascus, the botanical word needed to check for additional information about it. |
