Chan's Great Continent, The

by: Jonathan D. Spence

In keeping with the other non-recipe books reviewed in this issue, read how an award-winning Yale history professor sees China through Western Minds. Read about perceptions, realities, politics, and the culture of the Chinese from Marco Polo to today. Learn from Jesuit missionaries to Henry Kissinger about China, western style. Read continental views and see China in the eyes of many non-Chinese beholders. Orville Schell, Dean of the University of California’s Graduate School of Journalism wrote, "like a good archeologist, Spence sifts thorough exploring the West’s imagination about China." What a great dig!

China in history, biography, literature, through Spence’s eyes, and in the eyes of others helps the reader see China in his or her own eyes. Understand as much as you can about self and how you think. Doing so will be invaluable in all future reads about China and about the Chinese food culture.
