Lo & Behold is a series of books by Wong, all about things Chinese. This one is the first about food, and it has an interesting premise. Children should eat a new and unusual dish and should, as the dragon says, 'just try it.'
The main character is Lo Long and he hates Chinese food, particular things that are, in his words, 'stinky' or 'gross.' It is Behold, the dragon, who introduces him to three Chinese words used to describe foods, namely: se, xiang, and wei. They mean color, fragrance, and flavor.
The dragon flies his charge to several places and at each, he experiences something to change his approach to unusual foods. At the book's end, when young Lo needs to attend a Chinese banquet at a Chinese restaurant, his family is surprised, as is he, that he really does like what he is eating.
Intended for the pre-school set and those whose ages are in single digits, this book’s wonderful journey is of a boy and his dragon-friend. Together they teach about Chinese food and food culture. We give it four pairs of chopsticks and recommend it to all children, no matter their age.
