Women in the US share their Chinese community and their transformation from their husband's male world to a family-centered one. it is after World War II when they join their husbands and become a cohesive family learning a new language and new life-styles.

Their life in America circa 1940 - 1965 follows their immigration, naturalization, and the communities they live in. This is their new land with its many adjustments. There are thoughts needed as they unify thousands of miles from what they knew. This is what they get to know as they stabilize their families, learn a new language, raise children that need them, and live in a new environment in towns and villages they know nothing about.

They remake America and their own lives as they struggle, meet new Chinese neighbors, friends, and others in their new communities. Readers become empathetic and sympathetic about what these women do for themselves and their families, They are remaking America as they get caught up in difficulties on both sides of the ocean.
